二十世纪初，洋货冲击云南经济，云南劝业道及各界绅商共同努力创办实业，提倡“土货”，抵制“洋货”。建水举人范彭龄兄弟抵押祖业创办火柴公司、杨日升办松茂柴碳公司、罗荣光创火利公司等等。伴随滇越铁路的开工及昆明城的自动开埠，省商会王筱斋与云南劝业道道尹刘孝祚积极劝股，组织了官商合办的“耀龙电灯股份公司”，向德国西门子公司订购设备，聘请德专家毛地士亚指导，在滇池出水河螳螂川上筑起了水坝。1912年9月建成中国第一座水力发电站，该电站至今仍在运行供电。

　　In the early 20th century, foreign goods posed a threat to Yunnan's economy. Merchants in Yunnan established local enterprises
　　to fight this foreign invasion. Fan Pengling, a successful candidate in the imperial examination at the provincial level, and his
　　brother established a match company with the help of a loan guaranteed by family herediary property. Yang Risheng established
　　Songmou Fuel Company and Luo Rongguang established Houli Company. With the construction of Yunnan-Vietnam Railroad starting
　　and the KunmingTradingPort opening to the outside word, Wang Xiaozhai, director of Yunnan Merchants Society, and Liu Xiaozu, director
　　of Yunnan Business Society, established the Yiaozuo Electric Light Company jointly run by he local government and the merchants.
　　They bought the required from Siemens of Germany and invited German experts to assist. The dam was built on the Tanglang River
　　( an outlet of Lake Dianchi), and in September 1912, the first hydro-electric power station in China was completed. It has been
　　in operation ever since.
